St. Florianer Sängerknaben

Career

Just as one can only learn to swim, or ride a bicycle, or speak a language effortlessly and playfully as a child, for a singer it is also important to begin as early as possible. Therefore it is important for a Choir Boy to begin his holistic education by the age of 9 or 10.
The time they spend singing and rehearsing serves not only their musical education, and is in no way lost to the process of scholastic learning, but on the contrary: playing music nurtures the ability to concentrate. As is well known, travel educates too, and the Boys’ Choir travels to all parts of the Earth.

Nikolai Moser
“Looking back, the time in the Boys’ Choir left its mark on me in many ways. The musical education and training, the eventful life in the boarding school, and the unforgettable journeys always pull my thoughts back to that period.”
Mag. Nikolai Moser
Press Secretary for the Federal Chancellor

Of course, not every choir boy becomes a professional singer, but almost all of them sing again later in a choir, many direct a choir, and it can be said without reservation that all become critically discriminating and highly knowledgeable musical listeners.

There are some Choir Boys who have had impressive careers for which the foundation was laid during their time in St. Florian. The latest example is certainly the singer Alois Mühlbacher, who by the age of 17 had recorded four solo CDs and performed in opera houses all over the world. But many men who are successful in business and in other professions, too, look back on their time as Choir Boys as formative for their later course in life.
